"What Christ taught, the Apostles preached, and the Fathers kept"

We Are Proud to Share the Growth of ACTS With You

In 1989, the Thrice-Blessed Pope Shenouda III (1971 – 2012), delivered a message to the faithful of Los Angeles regarding his vision for the importance of world branches of the Theological School. During this visit, His Holiness established a branch in Los Angeles, under the name of Pope Shenouda III Coptic Orthodox Theological Seminary.

In July 2007, Saint Athanasius and Saint Cyril Coptic Orthodox Theological Library was established to further the efforts and goals of the School by organizing theological conferences, seminars, and events.

In 2015, the two organizations merged to form Saint Athanasius and Saint Cyril Coptic Orthodox Theological School (ACTS).

In June 2016, the Dean, Fr John Paul, was elevated to the rank of Auxiliary Bishop. His Grace Bishop Kyrillos is now the head of the Department of Christian Education in the Diocese of Los Angeles, and continues to oversee the work of ACTS as Dean.

On October 19, 2016, His Holiness Pope Tawadros signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MOU) with Claremont School of Theology (CST) and Claremont Graduate University (CGU), home of the renowned Claremont Coptic Encyclopedia. The MOU with CST and CGU enables ACTS students to take courses across all three institutions and obtain fully accredited graduate degrees.

In June 2017, ACTS hosted its inaugural Commencement ceremony celebrating seven graduates. Many have continued in Masters of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry programs.

In April 2018, the blessed bishops of North America established a collective desire to establish one strong theological school for North America. It is their hope and expectation that such a strong school, nationally accredited, could have various locations and satellites throughout North America. The bishops are now looking to ACTS to help in making this dream a reality. This collaboration would allow for the pooling of various resources, and establishment of extensive faculty throughout North America and a common curriculum with various course offerings, with the potential of having several programs in the future.

In June 2018, ACTS celebrated the second graduating class of fourteen students, doubling from the previous year.

In August 2018, ACTS launched three new programs for its students both at the graduate and undergraduate level.

In March 2019, ACTS Press was established as the publishing arm of the school to publish

In addition to these abundant blessings, our gracious God has allowed us to witness the following this year:

  • Made advanced theological education available to all those who wish to study (here and abroad), regardless of financial ability

  • Continued collaboration with North American and international dioceses to establish and standardize sound theological education for the Coptic Orthodox Church

  • Doubling of our student body to over 300 students, in the Diocese of Los Angeles, the Diocese of Southern United States, Canada, Egypt, Ethiopia, and Europe

  • Expansion and relocation of our library and offices to Anaheim

With God’s blessing and your help, we plan to focus the efforts for the coming year on:

  • Increasing support for students by updating technology

  • Acquiring the needed additional faculty and staff

  • Improving course offerings

  • Continuing to offer scholarships to new and current students

  • Expanding marketing efforts

  • Applying for grants that would help fund new and existing programs at ACTS

  • Acquiring various resources necessary to vie for National Accreditation which would make this the first Coptic Orthodox theological school of its kind!

  • Establishing a theological school in North America with various branches in major cities.
